Description

The Francis Tuttle-Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) Respiratory Care Program has developed an enrollment option for individuals that would like to transition from a current CRT credential to the RRT Advanced Practitioner credential. Classes will be in the format of on-line instruction supplemented by skills performance and testing at Francis Tuttle, and clinical rotations at area hospitals. Students are eligible for experiential learning credit based upon assessment of current knowledge and job skills.

Respiratory therapy students may receive up to 26 hours of college credits for first year respiratory courses based upon performance on a mock NBRC CRT Self-Assessment Examination, skill assessment and transcript evaluation. Applicants that qualify for advanced standing are eligible for admission as an online student and would complete the following courses to complete the respiratory care program.

  • Pulmonary Function Testing and Bronchoscopy
    Covers topics related to advanced diagnostic procedures. Performing and evaluating simple spirometry, lung volumes, diffusion capacity, bronchial reactivity testing, bronchoscopy, and sleep diagnostics.
  • Critical Care Respiratory Therapy
    Covers topics related to patient management in the critical care setting, development of care plans, use of respiratory care protocols and advanced procedures
  • Pediatric and Neonatal Respiratory Care
    Covers the various aspects of respiratory care unique to neonatal or pediatric patients.
  • Respiratory Therapy Seminar
    Covers topics related to specialty areas and management of the profession of respiratory care. Subjects included in the course are: smoking cessation and discharge planning, home care, exercise training, quality assurance, quality improvement, budgeting, personnel management and patient education.  
  • Clinic Experience I +
    Clinical application of theory and laboratory procedures from the Evaluation and
    Diagnostics course. Includes clinical participation in all phases of pulmonary
    function testing, & bronchoscopy, as well as beginning critical care.
    Includes scheduled eight-hour rotations at specific hospital and clinic sites.
  • Advanced Patient Management
    Didactic course advances and refines assessment and critical thinking skills of respiratory patient care management. Focus on concepts related to total patient management relative to specific disease processes.
  • Clinic Experience II +
    Clinical application in hospital setting of topics covered in Critical Care Respiratory Therapy and Pediatrics/Neonatal Respiratory Care courses. Includes scheduled rotations at adult, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. Must attend scheduled eight-hour rotations at specific hospital sites in order to complete assigned behavioral and didactic objectives.

Who can Attend?
Individuals should be currently working in Respiratory Care and have critical care experience. Applicants, who wish to attend, should hold Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential and wish to obtain their Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).

Part-time average of 600-680 hours

Workload
The time commitment for these courses will vary depending on your input, needs, and personal study habits. Your work load will include online modules, labs, and exams. Inability to meet this time requirement will reduce your ability to receive the maximum benefit from the courses, or in some cases to complete them.

Tuition & College Information

Online course tuition is $95.00 per credit hour. This includes college co-enrollment fees. Students that receive advanced standing college credit based upon testing will be billed a fee of $8.00/credit hour by OCCC.
Textbooks are estimated at $600.00. This does not include the anatomy and physiology text. Students will be required to furnish physical/immunization materials, and a $54.00 background check and $35.00 drug screen. Designated clinical scrubs estimated at $75.00.
Online classes are not eligible for Federal Financial Aid. Students may qualify for an unsubsidized student loan. There may be additional fees for health insurance if required by the clinical sites.

College Credit Information
Students must complete the entire Respiratory Care Therapist AAS degree program as listed in the Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) catalogue in order to be eligible for the RRT credential. The general education requirements for degree completion are listed in the RC application packet on-line as well as in the OCCC catalog.

Students that successfully complete the respiratory courses but still lack general education requirements will need to complete their degree requirements before receiving their certificate of completion from the respiratory care program.
